Welcome! We are a small practice located in northern Manhattan specializing in massage, prenatal massage and craniosacral therapy. We strive to help you with whatever you are working with, whether a strained muscle, managing stress and anxiety or to reconnect to your body. We tailor each session to your immediate needs while also taking into account your history, past injuries or trauma and lifestyle conditions. We integrate various massage techniques to best suit your needs, including swedish, deep tissue, myofacial and pressure points. Inwood Healing Arts was founded by Jean Freebury and Katy Orthwein in 2013, and we are proud to have served Inwood and its surrounding communities since then.
Jean Freebury, Katy Orthwein, Marta Espitia and Maria Luisa Mendoza are all New York State licensed massage therapists with extensive experience in the field. We have treated a wide range of populations, including dancers, athletes, musicians, actors, prenatal and postpartum women, children, the elderly, and everyone in-between. We are honored to have the opportunity to work with you and provide therapeutic touch to help you feel your best.
We have opened a second treatment space at 5030 Broadway. Suite 671 is just down the hall from our original Suite 667. We love this beautiful space and it has allowed us to offer increased availability and new partnerships with practitioners in other healing modalities. We are very happy to welcome Selina Greene Acupuncture to Inwood Healing Arts. To find out more about Selina's practice and to book an appointment with her, check out Selinagreene.com.
Our therapeutic massage sessions are always centered around your current needs. Our work is based in swedish massage, and we incorporate deep tissue work, myofascial release, pressure points and stretches to alleviate specific areas of tension or pain.
Massage therapy can be very helpful in alleviating the symptoms from many different conditions. Over the years, we have treated clients with a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, carpal tunnel, frozen shoulder, gastro-intestinal disorders, headaches, insomnia, ITB syndrome, lower and upper back pain, neck and shoulder pain, nerve impingements, plantar fascitis, scar tissue, sciatica, scoliosis and tendonitis, among other conditions.
Jean Freebury, Katy Orthwein, Marta Espitia and Maria Luisa Mendoza are all certified in prenatal and postnatal massage techniques, and have worked extensively with pregnant and postpartum women.
Our experience has helped us discern how to best work with and alleviate many common conditions that a pregnant woman might experience. These include sciatica, headaches, swelling, SI joint pain, hip pain, calf cramping, circulation issues, and a wide range of back pain or discomfort.
Our specialized pregnancy table allows a woman to comfortably lie on her belly while also being supported. The table allows space for a growing belly while giving support from a woven elastic mesh and wide sling that adjusts as your body changes.
While most women love the comfort of the table and the opportunity to lie on their belly, we are also happy to work in a side-lying position if that is preferred.
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a therapeutic modality that works directly with the nervous system through tracking the rhythms of the cerebrospinal fluid for health as well as restrictions. The therapist helps the client reconnect to the organizing forces at work on a foundational level of the body's system. This work can be deeply restorative, helping your body access its greatest potential for healing.
Craniosacral therapy can help with anxiety, stress, injuries, concussions, surgical recovery, migraines, gastro-intestinal disorders, and a wide range of both physical and emotional traumas experienced either recently or in one's past. In a craniosacral session, a client is fully clothed on the treatment table as the therapist holds at various places throughout the client's body.
Katy Orthwein is a certified Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist. She trained through Stillpoint and under Franklyn Sills, a pioneer in the field, from 2012-2014. She has continued to attend advanced trainings with Katherine Ukleja and Dominique Degrange. Katy is currently studying and incorporating Somatic Experiencing into her craniosacral sessions as applicable.
